Johan Bojer (born March 6, 1872 – died July 3, 1959) was a famous writer from Norway. He wrote many novels and plays. His stories often showed the lives of poor farmers and fishermen in his home country. He also wrote about Norwegian people who moved to the United States.
He was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature five times. This shows how important his writing was.
About Johan Bojer's Life
Johan Bojer was born in a small village called Ørkedalsøren. This place is now the town of Orkanger. His birth name was Johan Kristoffer Hansen. His parents were not married. He grew up as a foster child in a poor family in Rissa. This is near Trondheim, Norway.
Growing up, Bojer learned what it was like to be poor. He spent his early years working on a farm. He also worked as a bookkeeper. After his father passed away in 1894, he started using the last name Bojer.
Bojer's Writing Career
Johan Bojer started his writing career in 1893. His first book was called Unge tanker. He became more and more famous through the 1920s. People in Norway praised his work because he wrote about many different topics.
He became known around the world when many of his books were translated. Many critics agree that his best book is Den siste viking. The English title for this book is The Last of the Vikings.

This novel tells a strong and real story about fishermen from Trøndelag. They spent their winters fishing in the Lofoten islands. These islands are in the Arctic Circle, far north in Norway.
Bojer is also well-known for his novel The Emigrants. This important book is about why Norwegians moved to the North Dakota plains. It also tells about the challenges they faced there. In 1923, Bojer traveled to Litchville, North Dakota. He wanted to learn about the lives of the Norwegian immigrants who lived there. His visit helped him write the novel, which was first published in Norway as Vor egen stamme.
