Johan Valentín Camargo Ramos (born December 13, 1993) is a professional baseball player from Panama. He plays as an infielder, which means he plays positions like second base, third base, or shortstop. Johan has played for several teams in Major League Baseball (MLB), including the Atlanta Braves, Philadelphia Phillies, and San Francisco Giants. He is currently a free agent, looking for his next team.

Johan Camargo's Early Life

Johan Camargo was born in Panama City, Panama. His parents named him after a famous football (soccer) player named Johan Cruyff.

When Johan was a child, he naturally batted and threw with his left hand. His father taught him to throw with his right hand. Johan later became very good at switch-hitting, which means he can bat well from both the left and right sides of the plate. He joined his first organized baseball league when he was 13 years old.

Johan Camargo's Baseball Career

Playing for the Atlanta Braves

Starting in the Minor Leagues

Johan Camargo signed with the Atlanta Braves in July 2010. He was 16 years old and came from Panama. He started his professional career in 2012 with the Dominican Summer League Braves.

In 2013, he played for the Danville Braves. He mostly played as a shortstop. In 2014, he moved up to Single-A Rome Braves and then High-A Lynchburg Hillcats. He continued to play shortstop.

In 2015, Johan played for the High-A Carolina Mudcats. He was named an All-Star in the Carolina League that year. He also played in the Arizona Fall League with Peoria Javelinas.

By 2016, Johan was playing for the Double-A Mississippi Braves. He started playing second base and third base more often. This was because other talented players like Ozzie Albies and Dansby Swanson were also shortstops. The Braves added him to their main roster after this season.

Playing in Major League Baseball

Johan Camargo made his big league debut with the Atlanta Braves on April 11, 2017. He started getting more playing time when the team's third baseman was injured.

On July 9, he hit his first career home run against the Washington Nationals. Later that season, he played more at shortstop when Dansby Swanson was sent to the minor leagues.

In 2018, Camargo became the Braves' main third baseman. He played well, hitting 19 home runs. However, in 2019, the Braves signed another player, Josh Donaldson, for third base. Johan then played shortstop when Dansby Swanson was injured. He later had a shin injury in September.

In 2019, he hit 7 home runs. In 2020, he played mostly at second and third base. After the 2020 season, he played in the Dominican Professional Baseball League.

In 2021, Johan spent most of the season with the Triple-A Gwinnett Stripers. He learned to play first base there. He played very well for Gwinnett, hitting 19 home runs and driving in 67 runs. He was even named an MiLB Organization All-Star. The Braves won the 2021 World Series that year. Johan was on the team's roster for the National League Championship Series, which was a big step. After the season, the Braves decided not to offer him a new contract, making him a free agent.

San Francisco Giants

On August 11, 2023, Camargo signed a minor league contract with the San Francisco Giants. He had played many different positions in his career, including third base, shortstop, second base, and even some outfield.
