Early Life and Start in Baseball
Johan Camargo was born in Panama City, Panama. His parents were big fans of the soccer player Johan Cruyff and named their son after him.
When he was a kid, Camargo was naturally left-handed. He batted and threw with his left hand. However, his father taught him how to throw with his right hand. He became a switch-hitter, which means he can bat from both the left and right sides of the plate. He joined his first real baseball team when he was 13 years old.
Professional Career
Starting in the Minor Leagues
In 2010, when he was just 16, Camargo signed a contract with the Atlanta Braves. He started his professional journey in 2012 with the DSL Braves, a team in the Dominican Summer League. He played very well, getting a hit in about one out of every three at-bats.
Over the next few years, Camargo played for several minor league teams connected to the Braves. He mostly played the shortstop position. He played for teams like the Danville Braves, Rome Braves, and Carolina Mudcats. In 2015, he was chosen as an All-Star for his great performance in the Carolina League.
By 2016, he moved up to the Double-A level with the Mississippi Braves. To help his team, he learned to play new positions like second base and third base. This made him a very useful and versatile player. After a strong season, the Braves added him to their main 40-man team list.
Major League Debut with the Atlanta Braves
On April 11, 2017, Johan Camargo played his first game in the major leagues for the Atlanta Braves. He got more chances to play when another player was injured. On July 9, he hit his first-ever MLB home run against the Washington Nationals.
In 2018, Camargo became the Braves' main third baseman. He had a fantastic season, hitting 19 home runs and helping his team score 76 runs. He was also known for his good defense.
The next few seasons had ups and downs. In 2019, the Braves signed another player, Josh Donaldson, so Camargo's role changed. He later had an injury that kept him from playing for a while. In 2020, he played mostly second and third base.
In 2021, Camargo spent most of the year with the Gwinnett Stripers, the Braves' Triple-A team. He learned to play first base and had a great season there. He was even named to the Braves' playoff team for the National League Championship Series. That year, the Braves won the World Series, their first championship since 1995. After the season, Camargo became a free agent, meaning he could sign with any team.
Playing for Other MLB Teams
Philadelphia Phillies
On December 1, 2021, Camargo signed a one-year deal with the Philadelphia Phillies. He played in 52 games for them during the 2022 season, hitting 3 home runs. In September, he was sent to their Triple-A team, the Lehigh Valley IronPigs.
A Season with Three Organizations
The year 2023 was a busy one for Camargo. He first signed a minor league contract with the Kansas City Royals and played for their Triple-A team, the Omaha Storm Chasers. He played well, hitting 4 home runs in just 15 games.
In June, he joined the Detroit Tigers organization, playing for their Triple-A team, the Toledo Mud Hens. He played 22 games there before being released in August.
Later in August, he signed with the San Francisco Giants. He was quickly called up to the major league team. After playing in 8 games for the Giants, he was sent back to the minor leagues and was later released.
Tecolotes de los Dos Laredos
