Johan Hagbart Pedersen Grøttumsbraaten (born February 24, 1899 – died January 24, 1983) was a famous Norwegian skier. He was amazing at two types of skiing: Nordic combined and cross-country skiing. Nordic combined means you compete in both cross-country skiing and ski jumping. Cross-country skiing is when you ski across flat or hilly terrain.

Johan was so good that he won many medals at the early Winter Olympic Games and World Championships in the 1920s and early 1930s. He is remembered as one of the best skiers of his time!

Johan Grøttumsbraaten's Olympic Medals

Johan Grøttumsbraaten was a true star at the Winter Olympics. He won a total of six medals!

His First Olympics: Chamonix 1924

At the very first Winter Olympics in Chamonix, France, in 1924, Johan won three medals:

  • He earned a silver medal in the 18-kilometer cross-country ski race.
  • He also won a bronze medal in the longer 50-kilometer cross-country ski race.
  • And he took home another bronze medal in the Nordic combined event.

Double Gold at St. Moritz 1928

Four years later, at the 1928 Winter Olympics in St. Moritz, Switzerland, Johan was even more successful. He won two gold medals!

  • He won gold in the 18-kilometer cross-country ski race.
  • He also won gold in the Nordic combined event.

He was one of the most successful athletes at those Games.

Defending His Title: Lake Placid 1932

Johan continued his winning streak at the 1932 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, USA. He successfully defended his Olympic title, winning another gold medal in the Nordic combined event. This showed how consistently great he was!

World Championship Success

Besides the Olympics, Johan also shined at the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships. He won three gold medals there!

Early World Championship Wins

  • In 1926, he won his first World Championship gold medal in the Nordic combined event in Lahti, Finland.

Double Gold in 1931

  • In 1931, at the World Championships in Oberhof, Germany, he won two more gold medals. He was the best in both the 18-kilometer cross-country race and the Nordic combined event.

Holmenkollen Ski Festival Achievements

The Holmenkollen ski festival in Norway is a very important event for Nordic skiers. Johan Grøttumsbraaten was incredibly successful there.

  • He won the Nordic combined event at Holmenkollen five times! These wins were in 1923, 1926, 1928, 1929, and 1931.
  • He is one of only four people ever to win this event so many times.
  • In 1924, he also received the prestigious Holmenkollen medal. He shared this honor with another Norwegian skier, Harald Økern. This medal is one of the highest awards in Norwegian skiing.
