Playing Career
Seattle SuperSonics (2005–2009)
Johan Petro started his NBA journey with the Seattle SuperSonics. He was drafted by them in 2005. On March 30, 2007, he scored his career-high 22 points in a game against the Memphis Grizzlies. A year later, on March 5, 2008, he grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds.
During his time with the SuperSonics, the team was rebuilding. This meant they were trying to get new players to make the team stronger. Because of this, Petro did not make it to the playoffs with the SuperSonics. The team later moved and became the Oklahoma City Thunder in his last season with them.
Denver Nuggets (2009–2010)
In January 2009, Petro was traded to the Denver Nuggets. Even though the Nuggets first decided not to keep him, they signed him again in August 2009. With the Nuggets, Petro found more success. The team made it to the playoffs in both 2009 and 2010.
In the 2009 playoffs, the Nuggets played very well. They won against the New Orleans Hornets and Dallas Mavericks. This helped them reach the Western Conference Finals, which was a big achievement. They played against the Los Angeles Lakers, led by Kobe Bryant, but lost in six games. This was the furthest Petro ever went in the NBA playoffs. The Nuggets made the playoffs again in 2010 but lost in the first round.
New Jersey Nets (2010–2012)
In July 2010, Petro signed a three-year deal with the New Jersey Nets. Like the SuperSonics, the Nets were also rebuilding their team. This meant Petro did not reach the playoffs during his time with them.
On April 26, 2012, Petro scored the very last points for the New Jersey Nets. This happened in a game against the Toronto Raptors before the Nets moved to a new city.
Atlanta Hawks (2012–2013)
In July 2012, Petro was traded to the Atlanta Hawks. This trade involved several players moving between the Nets and the Hawks.
Later Career (2013–2017)
After playing in the NBA, Petro continued his basketball career around the world.
- In August 2013, he played for Zhejiang Guangsha in China. He left the team in January 2014.
- In February 2014, he returned to France and joined Limoges CSP.
- In January 2015, Petro signed with Mets de Guaynabo in Puerto Rico.
- In February 2016, he played for Leones de Ponce, also in Puerto Rico.
- In February 2017, Petro signed with the Sioux Falls Skyforce in the NBA Development League (now called the G League). He was waived by the team in March 2017, which marked the end of his professional playing career.

Johan Petro also played for the senior French national basketball team. He represented France at the 2006 FIBA World Championship. A big highlight for him was winning a gold medal with France at the 2013 EuroBasket tournament.
