Playing Professional Basketball
Starting in France and the NBA Draft
Johan Petro started his basketball journey in France. He was a key player for the French junior national team. In 2004, he helped his team, Pau-Orthez, win the French League title.
In 2005, Petro was chosen by the Seattle SuperSonics as the 25th pick in the 2005 NBA draft. This meant he was one of the top young players picked to join the NBA.
Time with the Seattle SuperSonics
Petro played for the Seattle SuperSonics from 2005 to 2009. During this time, he showed his skills by scoring a career-high 22 points in a game in 2007. He also grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds in another game in 2008. Rebounds are when a player gets the ball after a missed shot.
The SuperSonics team was going through a big change during these years. They were rebuilding their team after some star players left. Because of this, Petro's team did not make it to the playoffs. In his last season with the team, the SuperSonics moved to Oklahoma City and became the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Moving to the Denver Nuggets
In 2009, Petro was traded to the Denver Nuggets. This was a great move for him because the Nuggets were a very successful team. They made it to the playoffs in both 2009 and 2010.
In the 2009 playoffs, the Nuggets had an amazing run. They won against the New Orleans Hornets and the Dallas Mavericks. This helped them reach the Western Conference Finals, which was a huge achievement for the team. They played against the Los Angeles Lakers, led by superstar Kobe Bryant. The Lakers won the series, but reaching the Conference Finals was the farthest Petro ever went in the NBA playoffs.
The Nuggets made the playoffs again in 2010, but they were defeated in the first round.
Playing for the New Jersey Nets and Atlanta Hawks
In 2010, Petro signed a contract with the New Jersey Nets. Like the SuperSonics before, the Nets were also rebuilding their team. This meant Petro did not make it to the playoffs with them. In 2012, Petro scored the very last points for the New Jersey Nets before the team moved and changed its name.
Later in 2012, Petro was traded to the Atlanta Hawks. He played for them for one season.
Later Career and Retirement
After his time in the NBA, Johan Petro continued to play basketball around the world. He played for teams in China, like Zhejiang Guangsha, and then returned to France to play for Limoges CSP.
In 2014, Petro decided to take a break from basketball to get treatment for his back. He later played for teams in Puerto Rico, such as Mets de Guaynabo and Leones de Ponce. His last team was the Sioux Falls Skyforce in 2017, which is part of the NBA's development league.
Playing for France
Johan Petro also proudly played for the senior men's French national basketball team. He played in the 2006 FIBA World Championship. His biggest achievement with the French team was winning a gold medal at the 2013 EuroBasket tournament. This is a major championship for European basketball teams.
