Johann Ludwig Aberli was a talented Swiss artist. He was a painter and an etcher. He was born in Winterthur, Switzerland, on November 14, 1723. He passed away in Bern, Switzerland, on October 17, 1786.

The Life of Johann Ludwig Aberli

Johann Ludwig Aberli came from a simple family. His father worked as a watchman. After finishing school, Johann became a student of Heinrich Meyer. Meyer was a local artist. In 1741, Meyer helped Aberli get into a drawing school. This school was run by Johann Grimm [de]. While studying, Aberli also worked. He painted decorations.

Becoming a Landscape Artist

In the mid-1740s, Aberli traveled with Philipp Hieronymus Brinckmann. They explored the beautiful Bernese Oberland region. This trip made Aberli very interested in painting landscapes. In 1747, he married Christina Barbara Janss. She was from Saanen.

That same year, Aberli took over the drawing school. He became the new leader after his old teacher, Grimm. He often took his students on exciting trips. They visited places like Lake Geneva, Lake Biel, and Lake Neuchâtel. They also went back to the Oberland.

His Own Workshop and New Techniques

In the 1750s, Aberli opened his own art workshop. He also started a company to publish his artworks. He trained his employees, too. Two of his famous students were Adrian Zingg, an engraver, and Samuel Hieronymus Grimm, who painted detailed city views.

In 1759, Aberli took his students to Paris, France. They went to study the works of famous old artists in museums. They also visited the well-known engraving workshop of Johann Georg Wille.

After returning from Paris, Aberli built a small summer house. It was in Köniz. He also started collecting art. He earned a lot of money from his copper engravings. His watercolor paintings also sold well. To make copies of his watercolors, he created a special etching method. This method became known as the "Aberlische Manier."

Later Years and Legacy

In 1774, Aberli traveled through the Jura Mountains. He went with his friend and fellow artist, Sigmund Freudenberger. In 1779, the famous writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe visited Aberli. This happened during Goethe's second trip to Switzerland.

Johann Ludwig Aberli died when he was sixty-two years old. Another artist, Heinrich Rieter [de], continued Aberli's art business. The rest of Aberli's art collection was sold. Today, a street in Biel is named after him.
