Growing Grapes for Wine
There are about 220 hectares (540 acres) of vineyards around Lake Biel. Many different types of grapes are grown here. Traditionally, people made white wines, but now they also make more red wines. About 80 winegrowers tend to grapes like Chasselas, Pinot gris, Pinot noir, Pinot blanc, and Chardonnay. Most of these wine farms are run by families. Often, you can buy the wine directly from their cellars.
History of Wine Making
People have been growing grapes in the Lake Biel region since Roman times. Archeologists have even found old amphora (jars) that were used for wine. These vineyards still exist today thanks to a rule made in 1933. This rule stopped new buildings from being built in the vineyard areas.
