Lake Morat, also known as Lake Murten, is a beautiful lake in western Switzerland. It's called Lac de Morat in French and Murtensee in German. This lovely lake is located across two cantons: Fribourg and Vaud.
The lake gets its name from the charming town of Murten/Morat. This town sits right on the southern shore of the lake. It's a special place because people there speak both French and German!

Lake Morat is one of the smaller lakes in Switzerland. Even so, it's a very important part of the local area. It offers stunning views and is a great spot for nature lovers.
Where is Lake Morat Located?
This lake is found in the western part of Switzerland. It stretches across the borders of two cantons. These are the Canton of Fribourg and the Canton of Vaud. Its location makes it easy to visit from many parts of Switzerland.
How Big is Lake Murten?
Lake Murten is not huge, but it's still quite impressive. It is about 8.2 kilometers (5.1 miles) long. The lake is also around 2.8 kilometers (1.7 miles) wide. Its total area covers about 22.8 square kilometers (8.8 square miles).
Lake Depth and Water Flow
The deepest part of Lake Morat goes down about 45 meters (148 feet). Water flows into the lake mainly from the Broye river. The water then leaves the lake through the Broye canal. It takes about 1.6 years for all the water in the lake to be completely replaced. This is called its residence time.
