Early Life and Education
John Knebel was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma on October 4, 1936. He went to a famous school called West Point. He graduated from West Point in 1959.
After that, he continued his education. He earned a Master's degree from Creighton University in 1962. Then, in 1965, he got his law degree from American University.
Working in Law and Government
After finishing school, John Knebel worked as a lawyer. From 1965 to 1968, he practiced law in Washington, DC.
He also started working in government. In 1963 and 1964, he helped Congressman J. Ernest Wharton. Later, he became a general counsel for the Small Business Administration. This agency helps small businesses in the country.
In 1973, he became the General Counsel for the Department of Agriculture. This meant he was the main lawyer for the department that deals with farming. In December 1975, he was named the deputy secretary of agriculture. This was a very important role, just below the main Secretary.
Becoming Secretary of Agriculture
On November 4, 1976, President Gerald Ford chose John Knebel for a top job. He became the Secretary of Agriculture. This is a very important position in the President's cabinet.
His time as Secretary was short. It ended on January 20, 1977, when a new president took office. After leaving this role, he went back to working in law. He also became the president of the American Mining Congress.

John Knebel is married to Zenia Marks. She is from New Jersey. They have three children together. When he became Secretary of Agriculture in 1976, he and his family lived in McLean, Virginia.
