He represented the 6th district for several terms. He was a representative from 2001 to 2009 and again from 2011 to 2013.

John Ahern was born in Havre, Montana. His family later lived in Silver Spring, Maryland. He studied at the University of Maryland. He also attended the University of Denver. Ahern earned a law degree from Gonzaga University. He was a Catholic. He also served in the United States Army Reserves.
