Early Life and Education

John Knebel was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on October 4, 1936. He went to the West Point, a famous military school, and graduated in 1959. Later, he earned his Master's degree from Creighton University in 1962. In 1965, he completed his law degree at American University.

After finishing his education, Mr. Knebel worked as a lawyer in Washington, D.C.. He also helped Congressman J. Ernest Wharton as a legislative assistant. He served as a top lawyer, called General Counsel, for the Small Business Administration. This agency helps small businesses in the U.S. In 1973, he became the General Counsel for the Department of Agriculture.

Serving as Secretary of Agriculture

On November 4, 1976, President Gerald Ford chose John Knebel to be the secretary of agriculture. This was a very important job, overseeing farming and food policies for the entire country. His time in this role was short, ending on January 20, 1977.

After his government service, Mr. Knebel returned to working in law. He also became the president of the American Mining Congress. This organization represents the mining industry.

Personal Life

John Knebel married Zenia Marks, who is from New Jersey. They have three children together. When he was appointed Secretary of Agriculture in 1976, he and his family lived in McLean, Virginia.
