John Anderson (born in Ayrshire in 1748 – died in Invergarry on May 4, 1832) was a Scottish carpenter. He was a close friend of the famous poet Robert Burns. It is believed that John Anderson even built Robert Burns' coffin in 1796.

John Anderson is also well-known because he is the subject of a famous poem by Burns. This poem, called "John Anderson My Jo, John," was later turned into a song.

Life and Legacy

John Anderson lived a long life, passing away at 84 years old. He was a skilled carpenter, a trade that involves building and repairing things made of wood. His friendship with Robert Burns made him a notable figure in Scottish history.

Burial Place and Plaque

John Anderson is buried in Kilchuimen Burial Ground, near Fort Augustus. His grave has a special Scottish Heritage plaque. This plaque honors him as a friend of Robert Burns. It also mentions that he was the "character of one of the most touching of Burns Songs."

The plaque was given by the family of Norman Watters, who was a past president of the Bowhill People's Burns Club. The actual gravestone also mentions his daughter, Catherine, and his son-in-law, James Grierson. James Grierson was sadly lost when the steamship PS Comet II sank near Gourock in 1825.

The Famous Poem

Robert Burns' poem "John Anderson My Jo, John" is a beautiful song about enduring love. The words describe a couple growing old together and remembering their younger days. It shows a deep and lasting affection between them.

Poem's Origin

Interestingly, Robert Burns' poem was not entirely new. It was based on an older Scottish song that had the same title and rhythm. However, Burns changed the meaning of the song completely.

The original version of "John Anderson My Jo, John" was quite different. It was a folk song from around 1744 that had a playful, but less appropriate, meaning. Robert Burns took this older tune and transformed it into a heartfelt celebration of love that lasts through old age. This shows how Burns could take existing works and give them new, powerful meanings.
