The John B. Tytus House is a special old house in Middletown, Ohio, United States. It was built in 1865. This house was once home to John Butler Tytus, a brilliant inventor. He created a new way to make steel that changed how factories worked all over America. Because of his important invention, the house became a National Historic Landmark in 1976. This means it's a very important place in American history.

The John B. Tytus House is in Middletown's South Main Street District. It is a three-story building made of red brick. The house has a unique mix of styles. You can see rounded arches, which are part of the Romanesque style. It also has half-timbered sections, like those found in Tudor Revival homes. Inside, the house has beautiful carved wood and an original chandelier in the dining room.
Who Was John Butler Tytus?
The house was built in 1865 by John Butler Tytus Sr. He owned a paper mill in the area. His son, also named John Butler Tytus, lived in this house his whole life. The younger John Tytus went to Yale University. He studied humanities, which are subjects like history and literature.
After college, he started working at a steel factory called Armco. There, he learned a lot about how steel was made. He became very skilled as an engineer.
Tytus's Big Idea: Steel Rolling
John Tytus noticed that making steel could be much faster. He saw that if hot steel could be fed continuously through rollers, it would save a lot of time and effort. In 1921, he began working on this idea.
By 1924, his new process was ready. The company built a new factory just to use his invention. It was a huge success right away! Soon, other steelmakers started using Tytus's method too.
His invention allowed factories to make much larger amounts of steel. They could also produce it much faster than before. This new way of making steel changed the entire American steel industry.
