Kids Encyclopedia Facts

John Baptist Caryll (born December 13, 1713 – died March 7, 1788) was an important figure in a historical movement called Jacobitism. He held the title of the third Jacobite Baron Caryll of Durford.

Who Was John Baptist Caryll?

John Baptist Caryll was a nobleman who lived in the 1700s. He was part of a group known as Jacobites. These were people who supported the Stuart family's claim to the thrones of England, Scotland, and Ireland. They believed the Stuart kings, who had been removed from power, should rule again.

A "Baron" is a title of nobility, like a lord, often passed down through families. John Baptist Caryll inherited this title from his grandfather.

Early Life and Family

John Baptist Caryll was the oldest son of John Caryll, who sadly passed away before his own father. His mother was Lady Mary Mackenzie. Her father was the 4th Earl of Seaforth, another important noble figure.

Challenges and Changes

After John Baptist Caryll inherited his title from his grandfather, he faced some tough times. Because he was a Catholic in England during this period, he faced certain laws that made life difficult for Catholics. These laws meant he couldn't hold certain jobs or own land easily.

Due to these challenges, he had to sell some of his family's properties in places like West Grinstead and Harting in West Sussex.

Working for the "Young Pretender"

Later, John Baptist Caryll moved to Rome, Italy. There, he joined the household of a famous historical figure known as the "Young Pretender." This was Charles Edward Stuart, also called "Bonnie Prince Charlie." He was the grandson of the last Stuart king and was trying to reclaim the throne for his family.

The Jacobites recognized Charles Edward Stuart as their rightful king, calling him "King Charles III." John Baptist Caryll became a very important helper to him. Charles Edward Stuart made Caryll his Secretary of State. This role was like being a chief advisor or a top government official, helping to manage important affairs.

Caryll also received a special honor: he was made a Knight of the Thistle. This is a very old and respected award, especially in Scotland, given for loyalty and service.

Later Years

In 1777, John Baptist Caryll returned to France. He passed away in Dunkirk on March 7, 1788.
