John Baptist Hogan (born June 24, 1829 – died September 29, 1901) was an important Catholic thinker and teacher. He was from Ireland but also lived in France. People sometimes called him Abbé Hogan. He was born near Ennis, County Clare, Ireland, and passed away in Paris, France.

A Life of Learning and Teaching

John Baptist Hogan was part of a special group called the Sulpicians. They are known for educating priests. Hogan became the very first leader, or rector, of Saint John's Seminary in Boston. This school started in 1884.

Later, from 1889 to 1894, he taught at the Catholic University of America. This university was new at the time. It is in Washington, D.C.

After teaching, he went back to Saint John's Seminary. He became the rector again. This happened after the person who took his place, Charles B. Rex, passed away.

Family Connections

John Baptist Hogan had a nephew named Dr. John F Hogan. His nephew also became an important leader in education. He served as the president of Maynooth College in Ireland.
