John Beresford (born January 20, 1774 – died March 1, 1865) was an important person from Ireland who also had connections to England. He was known as the 2nd Baron Decies, which means he held a special title in the British system of nobility. He was also a clergyman, which is a leader in the church.

Early Life and Family

John Beresford was born on January 20, 1774. He was one of nine children born to William Beresford, 1st Baron Decies and Elizabeth FitzGibbon. His father was the 1st Baron Decies. John had many relatives who were also important, including his uncle John FitzGibbon, 1st Earl of Clare. He also had uncles like George Beresford, 1st Marquess of Waterford and John Beresford, who was a Member of Parliament.

John Beresford studied at Emmanuel College, Cambridge University.

Career as a Clergyman

John Beresford became a clergyman in the Church of Ireland. This means he was a minister or priest. He worked as the Rector of Tuam. A Rector is a priest in charge of a parish. He held this position while his father was the Archbishop of Tuam from 1794 to 1819. An Archbishop is a very senior leader in the church.

When his father passed away on September 6, 1819, John became the 2nd Baron Decies. He inherited this title because his older brother, Marcus Beresford, had died earlier in 1804 without getting married.

Personal Life and Family

On July 26, 1810, John Beresford married Charlotte Philadelphia Horsley. She was the only daughter of Robert Horsley. Charlotte inherited Bolam House in Northumberland. This house was built by her father using stone from an old castle. After his marriage, John added "Horsley" to his last name, as was required by his wife's inheritance.

John and Charlotte had one son and three daughters:

  • William Robert John Horsley Beresford, 3rd Baron Decies (1811–1893). He later married Catharine Anne Dent.
  • Hon. Georgiana Catherine Horsley Beresford (born 1812). She married William Watson and later Henry Edward Brown.
  • Hon. Louisa Elizabeth Horsley Beresford (1814–1891). She married Ernest Brudenell-Bruce, 3rd Marquess of Ailesbury.
  • Hon. Caroline Agnes Horsley Beresford, Duchess of Montrose (1818–1894). She married James Graham, 4th Duke of Montrose. After his death, she married William Stuart Stirling-Crawfurd, and later Marcus Henry Milner.

Lady Decies, John's wife, died on March 9, 1852. Lord Decies himself passed away on March 1, 1865. His son, William, then became the 3rd Baron Decies.

His Children's Families

Through his son William, John Beresford became a grandfather to several children. These included William Marcus de la Poer Horsley-Beresford, 4th Baron Decies and John Graham Hope Horsley de la Poer Beresford, 5th Baron Decies.

His daughter Louisa had seven children. Among them were Lady Louisa Caroline Brudenell-Bruce and Henry Augustus Brudenell-Bruce, 5th Marquess of Ailesbury.

His youngest daughter, Caroline, had four children from her first marriage. These included Douglas Graham, 5th Duke of Montrose and Lady Agnes Caroline Graham.
