His Career and Public Role
When his father passed away on 1 March 1865, William became the 3rd Baron Decies. This meant he inherited his father's noble title.
He had a military career, serving as a captain in two famous regiments: the 10th Hussars and the Grenadier Guards. He also served as a Representative Peer of Ireland. This role meant he was chosen by other Irish peers to represent them in the British Parliament.
Lord Decies was not very involved in politics. However, he was very interested in farming. He was known as an "enlightened agriculturalist." He worked hard to improve his family's land, the Bolam estate. Under his care, this land became very productive for farming.

He was a quiet person and sometimes seemed a bit unusual. For example, he liked to wear old-fashioned clothes. But underneath his reserved nature, he was kind and had the qualities of a true English nobleman. He was a big fan of the Newcastle Wrestling Society. He enjoyed watching wrestling matches and knew a lot about the different moves.
