George de la Poer Beresford, 1st Marquess of Waterford (born January 8, 1735 – died December 3, 1800) was an important Irish politician. He was also known as George Beresford, the 2nd Earl of Tyrone, from 1763 to 1789. He held high honors like being a Knight of St Patrick (KP) and a member of the Privy Council of Ireland.
Early Life and Family Background
George Beresford was the oldest surviving son of Marcus Beresford, 1st Earl of Tyrone. His mother was Lady Catherine Power. She was also known as the Baroness de la Poer in her own right.
George had several siblings. His brother, John Beresford, became a well-known statesman. Another brother was William Beresford, 1st Baron Decies.
George received a good education. He studied at Kilkenny College and later at Trinity College Dublin. These were important schools in Ireland at the time.
Political Career and Achievements
George Beresford began his political journey in the Irish House of Commons. This was like the parliament for Ireland back then. From 1757 to 1760, he represented County Waterford.
Later, from 1761 to 1763, he was a Member of Parliament for Coleraine. In 1763, his father passed away. George then inherited his father's title, becoming the Earl of Tyrone. This meant he moved from the House of Commons to the Irish House of Lords.
He also became a member of the Privy Council of Ireland. This was a group of important advisors to the King. George held several other important roles. He was the Governor of Waterford starting in 1766. He also served as the chief record keeper for County Waterford from 1769 to 1800.
During his career, he received more honors. He was made a Knight of St Patrick, which is a very special award in Ireland. In 1786, he was given the title of Baron Tyrone in Great Britain. Finally, in 1789, he was made a Marquess. This was a very high rank in the nobility.
Personal Life and Family
George Beresford married Elizabeth Monck on April 19, 1769. Elizabeth was the daughter of Henry Monck. Her mother, Lady Isabella Bentinck, was related to the Duke of Portland.
George and Elizabeth had eight children together:
- Marcus Beresford (1771–1783), who sadly died young.
- Henry de la Poer Beresford (1772–1826), who became the 2nd Marquess of Waterford. He was also a politician.
- Most Rev. Lord John George (1773–1862), who became the Archbishop of Armagh.
- Lord George Thomas Beresford (1781–1839), who also became a politician.
- Lady Isabella Anne Beresford (1776–1850).
- Lady Catharine Beresford (1777–1843).
- Lady Anne Beresford (1779–1842).
- Lady Elizabeth Louisa Beresford (1783–1856). She married two important military men.
George also had two sons outside of his marriage. They were William Carr Beresford, 1st Viscount Beresford and Sir John Beresford, 1st Baronet. Both of them became very successful in their own right.
Lord Waterford passed away in 1800. His oldest living son, Henry, inherited his titles and became the next Marquess of Waterford.
