John Berkeley, 5th Baron Berkeley of Stratton (born May 16, 1697 – died April 18, 1773) was an important British politician. He held the title of Baron Berkeley of Stratton, which is a noble rank. John Berkeley was the last person in his family's 'Bruton branch' to hold this title.

Early Life and Education

John Berkeley was the son of William Berkeley, who was the 4th Baron Berkeley of Stratton. His mother was Frances, the daughter of Sir John Temple. Sir John Temple was a Speaker in the Irish House of Commons, which is like a parliament.

John Berkeley went to Christ Church, Oxford for his education. This is a famous college at the University of Oxford in England.

A Career in Politics

John Berkeley began his political journey in 1735. He was chosen to represent the area of Stockbridge in the British Parliament. He served as a Member of Parliament (MP) until 1741.

In 1741, his father passed away. John then inherited the title of Baron and became the 5th Baron Berkeley of Stratton. This meant he moved from the House of Commons to the House of Lords, which is the upper house of the British Parliament.

Important Roles in Government

John Berkeley held several key positions in the government:

  • In 1743, he became the Captain of the Yeomen of the Guard. This group protects the monarch. He held this role until 1746.
  • He joined the Privy Council in 1752. This is a group of advisors to the British monarch.
  • From 1755 to 1756, he served as the Treasurer of the Household. This job involved managing the royal household's money.
  • He was the Captain of the Honourable Corps of Gentlemen Pensioners from 1756 to 1762. This is another ceremonial guard unit for the monarch.
  • From 1762 to 1770, he had two important roles in London. He was the Lord-Lieutenant of the Tower Hamlets and the Constable of the Tower of London. The Constable was in charge of the famous Tower of London.

Family Life and Legacy

Lord Berkeley of Stratton was married during his lifetime. However, he did not have any children.

He passed away in April 1773 at the age of 75. He died at Bruton Abbey in Somerset, which was a family home. Because he had no children, his title of Baron Berkeley of Stratton ended when he died.

He left his large estates, which included Berkeley Square in London, to a relative. This relative was Frederick Augustus Berkeley, the 5th Earl of Berkeley.
