Famous Books by John Boyne
The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas
The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas was published in 2006. This book has sold over seven million copies around the world. A film based on the book was made in Budapest in 2007 and released in 2008. The film was directed by Mark Herman. It starred Asa Butterfield, David Thewlis, Vera Farmiga, Rupert Friend, and Sheila Hancock. In January 2020, the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum suggested that the book should be avoided by those wanting an accurate understanding of the Holocaust. Boyne responded that the museum's criticism contained incorrect information.
My Brother's Name Is Jessica
Boyne's 2019 book, My Brother's Name Is Jessica, is about a young boy learning to understand his older sibling. His older sibling comes out as a trans girl. The book received some criticism about how it showed transgender topics. Boyne explained that he was inspired by a transgender friend. He also spoke with experts and several trans people to make sure the book was authentic. He later deleted his Twitter account because of online harassment. Some writers supported him. In 2020, writer Aidan Comerford apologized for his tweets about Boyne. Comerford said his tweets were "relentless harassment" that caused Boyne "great distress." Boyne accepted the apology.
