Asa Butterfield is a talented English actor. He started acting when he was very young. He became well-known for his roles in movies like The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas (2008) and Hugo (2011). He also starred in the popular Netflix TV show Sex Education from 2019 to 2023.

Early Life
Asa Butterfield was born on April 1, 1997, in Islington, London. His mom, Jacqueline Farr, is a psychologist. His dad, Sam Butterfield, writes ads. Asa went to Stoke Newington School.
Acting Career
Asa started acting when he was just seven years old. He joined the Young Actors Theatre Islington. He got small parts in the TV drama After Thomas (2006) and the movie Son of Rambow (2007).
Early Roles and Breakthrough
In 2008, Asa had a guest role in the TV series Ashes to Ashes. That same year, when he was ten, Asa played the main character in The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas. The director, Mark Herman, said Asa's acting was amazing. They chose him after auditioning many other boys.
The filmmakers wanted someone who could show the main character's innocence. They kept Asa's knowledge about the Holocaust limited during filming. This helped him play his innocent character better. The final scenes were filmed at the end to prepare him and Jack Scanlon for the movie's dramatic ending.
Asa also played Mordred in the TV series Merlin in 2008. He appeared in a few more episodes of Merlin. In 2010, he had a small part in The Wolfman. He then starred as Norman Green in Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang (2010). Both the movie and his acting received good reviews.
Starring in Major Films
When he was 13, Asa played the main character in Martin Scorsese's movie Hugo. This film was based on the book The Invention of Hugo Cabret. Hugo came out in 2011 and was very successful with critics.
Asa then played the main role of Andrew "Ender" Wiggin in the movie Ender's Game. This film was based on the novel by Orson Scott Card. Ender's Game was released in 2013.
After Ender's Game, Asa was cast in the British drama X+Y. He played Nathan Ellis, a math genius with autism. Nathan competes in a big international math competition. The movie was shown for the first time in 2014. Asa's acting in X+Y was highly praised. He was even nominated for a Best Actor award.
In 2015, Asa was in the movie Ten Thousand Saints. In 2016, he played Jacob Portman in Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. He also starred as Gardner Elliot in The Space Between Us and Sebastian in The House of Tomorrow in 2017.
Sex Education and Recent Work
In 2018, Asa got the main role of Otis Milburn in the Netflix comedy-drama series Sex Education. The show was released in 2019 and became very popular. The second season came out in 2020, the third in 2021, and the fourth and final season in 2023.
Other Interests
Asa enjoys making music. He has released a mashup of two songs: "Teenage Dirtbag" and "Making Plans for Nigel". He is also part of a music group called Mambo Fresh with his brother.
In 2012, Asa helped design a turn-based video game for iPad called Racing Blind. He made it with his dad and brother. The game was released in 2013.
Asa is also very into competitive Nintendo gaming. In 2017, he competed in the Nintendo World Championships. He is a big fan of competitive Super Smash Bros. and has joined esports teams like Panda Global and Team Liquid.
Since 2017, Asa has taught an acting class in London. The class covers acting techniques. Students even work on scenes from his movies. In 2018, some of his students appeared as extras in the movie Greed, which Asa was also in.
In 2023, Asa played in the annual Soccer Aid charity football match. This event raises money for UNICEF. Asa is a lifelong fan of Arsenal football club. He scored England's first goal in the match.
