Sir John Richard Grenfell Bradfield (born May 20, 1925 – died October 13, 2014) was a smart British scientist and a business leader. He was a biologist, someone who studies living things. He was also an entrepreneur, meaning he started new projects and businesses.

Sir John is best known for creating the Cambridge Science Park. This was the very first "Science Park" in all of Europe. A Science Park is a special place where science companies and researchers work together.

Early Life and Education

John Bradfield grew up in Cambridge, England. He went to the Cambridge and County High School for Boys. This school is now called Hills Road Sixth Form College.

In 1942, John won a special scholarship. This helped him study natural sciences at Trinity College, Cambridge. He worked very hard and earned two advanced degrees, an MA and a PhD.

After his studies, he became a Research Fellow. This meant he did important research in cell biology. In 1947, he became a Fellow of Trinity College. He held this important position for the rest of his life.

Building the Cambridge Science Park

Sir John Bradfield was a key leader at Trinity College. From 1956 to 1992, he was the Senior Bursar. This role meant he managed the college's money and properties.

In the early 1970s, he had a big idea. He wanted to create a place where science and business could grow together. Under his guidance, Trinity College started the Cambridge Science Park in 1970.

This park was built on the edge of the city. It became a home for many new science and technology companies. Sir John was the manager of the Cambridge Science Park until he retired in 1992.

He also helped the community in other ways. From 1993 to 1997, he was the Chairman of Addenbrooke's NHS Trust. This is a group that helps run a big hospital.

Awards and Recognition

Sir John Bradfield received many honors for his work. These awards recognized his important contributions.

In 1985, he was given the CBE award. This stands for Commander of the Order of the British Empire. It's a special award from the Queen of England.

Cambridge University also honored him in 1992. He received an Honorary Degree. This is a special title given to people who have achieved great things.

In 2007, he was given a knighthood. This meant he became "Sir John." He received this honor for his amazing work in science, business, and for helping the community in Cambridge.

His Final Years

Sir John Bradfield passed away on October 13, 2014. He was 89 years old. He died at Trinity College, where he had spent so much of his life. He was on his way to a dinner for the companies at the Cambridge Science Park.
