John Brande Trend facts for kids
John Brande Trend, often called J.B. Trend (1887–1958), was a British expert on Spain. He was the very first Professor of Spanish at the famous University of Cambridge.
Trend was born in Southampton, England. He went to Christ's College, Cambridge, a part of Cambridge University. There, he earned a special scholarship to study Natural Science.
After serving in Europe during the First World War, Trend became very interested in Spain. He loved the Spanish language, its history, and especially the music of Spain. He learned a lot about Spanish culture and history.
Becoming a Professor
In 1933, J.B. Trend was chosen for a very important job. He became the first Professor of Spanish at Cambridge University. This was a big step for Spanish studies in Britain.
His knowledge covered many different topics about Spain. He wrote several well-known books. These included The Origins of Modern Spain (published in 1934) and The Civilization of Spain (published in 1944). These books helped many people understand Spain better.
Trend also had a special connection with the famous Spanish composer Manuel de Falla. They wrote letters to each other often. Trend even wrote the first important book in English about Falla's music. This book was called Manuel de Falla and Spanish Music and came out in 1929.
