Sir John Brigg (born 21 September 1834 – died 30 September 1911) was an important British politician. He was a member of the Liberal Party. This political group worked to make Britain a better place. Sir John Brigg spent his life helping the people of his local area.

His Early Life and Family

John Brigg was born in 1834. He was the second son of John Brigg and Margaret Ann Marriner. His family lived in Keighley, a town in England.

In 1860, John Brigg married Mary Anderton. She was from Bingley, another town nearby. Together, they had five children. They had four sons and one daughter.

Serving His Community in Politics

Sir John Brigg was a Member of Parliament (MP). An MP is someone elected to represent people in the government. He represented the Keighley area. This area was part of the West Riding of Yorkshire. He served as an MP from 1895 until he passed away in 1911.

He held several important roles. He was a Justice of the Peace. This meant he helped with local law and order. He was also a Deputy Lieutenant for Yorkshire. This is a special role for a senior official in the county. He was given this honor in 1902.

Sir John Brigg was also an Alderman on the Yorkshire County Council. An Alderman is a senior member of a local government council. In 1909, he received a special honor. He was Knighted, which means he was given the title "Sir" by the King.

His Business Ventures

Before becoming a full-time politician, Sir John Brigg was a successful businessman. He worked in the Worsted industry. This industry makes a type of wool fabric. He was the Chairman of John Brigg & Company Ltd. This company made worsted fabrics in Keighley.

He was also a director for several other companies. He helped lead the Leeds and Liverpool Canal Company. This company managed an important canal. He was also a director for William Ramsden & Company Ltd. Sir John Brigg was also a director and Vice-Chairman of Bradford Old Bank. He also served on the advisory board for United Counties Bank.

Helping with Education

Sir John Brigg cared a lot about education. He was a Governor for several schools. These included Skipton Grammar School and Giggleswick Grammar School.

He also helped start the Keighley Trade School. This school taught useful skills for jobs. He also helped to improve the Girls’ Grammar School in Keighley. He was a Governor for the Girls Grammar Schools in Skipton and Keighley. He was also a Life Governor and Council Member of Yorkshire College. This college later became the University of Leeds.

His Later Years

Sir John Brigg lived a long and busy life. He passed away on 30 September 1911. He was 77 years old. He left behind a legacy of public service.
