John Browne (Parliamentarian) facts for kids
John Browne (born in 1582 – died on May 16, 1659) was an English lawyer and politician. He was a member of the House of Commons, which is like a part of the government, at different times between 1621 and 1653. He was a strong supporter of the Parliamentary side during the English Civil War.
Early Life and Education
John Browne was the son of another John Browne from Frampton, a town in Dorset, England. When he was 16 years old, in 1598, he started studying at Magdalen College, Oxford. This was a famous university. In 1599, he also became a student at the Middle Temple, which is a place where people learn to become lawyers.
A Career in Parliament
John Browne became a Member of Parliament (MP) for the first time in 1621. He represented the town of Bridport. An MP is someone elected to speak for the people in their area in the government.
He was chosen again for Bridport in 1628. However, his election was later cancelled on April 12 of that year.
Later, in June 1641, he was elected to represent the whole area of Dorset. This was for a very important group of MPs known as the Long Parliament. He continued to serve in Parliament until 1653. He remained an MP even during some very difficult times for the government.
Later Years
John Browne lived a long life. He passed away in 1659 when he was 78 years old.
