John Byset the Elder, Lord of the Aird (died 1257) was a Scottish nobleman. He is known as the ancestor of the Bissett family from the Glens of Antrim in medieval northeastern Ireland, which is now Northern Ireland.

About John Byset

John Byset was born in Scotland. We don't know many details about his early life. He moved to Ireland and then to England. This happened after his uncle, Walter Byset, Lord of Aboyne, was involved in a serious event concerning Padraig, Earl of Atholl. King Henry III of England welcomed John and Walter.

We know John Byset died in 1257. This date is recorded in old writings called the Annals of Ulster. His name is important because his descendants in Ireland used the Gaelic name Mac Eoin (Bissett) of the Glens. They used this name until the 16th century.

John Byset had a son named John Bissett of Lovat.

Some historical records suggest that John Byset founded Beauly Priory in the year 1230. A priory is a type of monastery.
