Walter Byset's Early Life and Family
Walter Byset was born in Scotland. In 1233, he married a woman named Ada de Galloway. She was the daughter of a powerful lord named Lochlann of Galloway and the sister of another important figure, Alan of Galloway. This marriage connected Walter to a very influential family in Scotland.
Challenges and Exile
In 1242, Walter Byset faced a big problem. After a tournament in Haddington, he and his nephew, John Byset, were accused of being involved in a serious event that led to the death of Padraig, Earl of Atholl, who was a relative. Because of these accusations, Walter and John had to leave Scotland.
They first went to Ireland and then to England. Even though King Alexander II of Scotland tried to protect Walter, he was eventually banished from Scotland. This meant he lost his lands and had to live in England. In England, he found safety and was welcomed by King Henry III of England.
Castle and Capture
Years later, in 1248, Walter Byset took control of Dunaverty Castle. King Henry III of England even allowed him to get supplies from Ireland to make the castle stronger. However, in the same year, Dunaverty Castle was captured. Walter Byset was then taken prisoner by Allan, who was the son of the Earl of Atholl.
His Final Years
Walter Byset passed away in 1251. He died on the Isle of Arran, an island off the west coast of Scotland.
