John Delaval Carpenter, 4th Earl of Tyrconnell (born 16 December 1790 – died 25 June 1853) was an important British nobleman. He held the title of Earl of Tyrconnell. He also served in a military group called the North York Corps of Yeomanry.

John Delaval Carpenter was the second son of Charles and Elizabeth Carpenter. His father, Charles, was a naval officer. John's uncle, George Carpenter, 2nd Earl of Tyrconnell, passed away in 1805. The title then went to John's older brother, also named George.

When his brother George died in 1812, John inherited the title and became the 4th Earl of Tyrconnell.

John's Family Life

In 1817, John married Sarah Crowe. She was the only child of Robert Crowe, who owned a place called Kiplin Hall.

Sarah inherited Kiplin Hall from her father in 1818. She lived there until she passed away in 1868. John and Sarah had one daughter, Elizabeth Anne Carpenter, who sadly was born and died on the same day in 1847.

After Sarah's death, Kiplin Hall went to a cousin named Walter Cecil Talbot. He changed his last name to Carpenter to follow the rules of the will. Walter Talbot, who was an admiral in the Royal Navy, lived at Kiplin Hall for many years.

What Is a Coat of Arms?

A coat of arms is a special design or symbol that represents a family or a person. It's like a unique badge. Lord Tyrconnell's coat of arms was passed down through his family. It seems to have come from French or Norman ancestors.

The design of his arms is "Paly of six, argent and gules, on a chevron azure, 3 cross crosslets or." This means it has six vertical stripes, alternating silver and red. On top of this, there's a blue V-shape with three gold crosses.

The Carpenter Family Arms

The Carpenter family's coat of arms is often called the Hereford Arms. This name comes from an old family home in Hereford, England. The crest (the part above the shield), the supporters (figures holding the shield), and the family motto have changed over time. The motto is "Per Acuta Belli," which means "Through the Asperities of War."

These arms were used by John Carpenter, the younger, who was an important town clerk in London during the 1400s. Later, other members of the Carpenter family, like Sir William Boyd Carpenter and John Boyd-Carpenter, Baron Boyd-Carpenter, also used these arms.

It's important to know that Lord Tyrconnell and Sir William Boyd Carpenter are not directly related through male family members. Their family connection is through marriages involving women in the family.
