His Adventures and Career

When John Chidley was 19 years old, he joined a big sea journey. He sailed with Humphrey Gilbert, a famous explorer. This trip brought him close to other well-known English explorers. He became friends with Sir Walter Raleigh and John Davis (explorer). These men were all important explorers from Devon.

In 1586, John Chidley worked in government for Devon, alongside Walter Raleigh. A year later, on August 1, 1587, his friend John Davis (explorer) named Cape Chidley in Canada after him. This was a way to honor John Chidley's contributions.

In 1589, John Chidley was inspired by the success of another explorer, Thomas Cavendish. Cavendish had made a lot of money from his sea voyages. John Chidley decided to fund his own expedition.
