John Clancy was an American soldier. He served in the U.S. Army with the 1st Artillery Regiment. He is remembered for his bravery during a difficult time in American history.
A Hero's Story
John Clancy received the Medal of Honor. This is the highest award a soldier can get for bravery. He earned it for his actions at the Battle of Wounded Knee. This event is now known as the Wounded Knee Massacre.
Joining the Army
John Clancy joined the U.S. Army on August 2, 1887. He was about 19 years old at the time. He became part of Company E, 1st Artillery Regiment. He enlisted at a place called "Vanco Bks," which might have been Vancouver Barracks in Washington.
Bravery at Wounded Knee
On December 29, 1890, John Clancy was involved in the events at Wounded Knee. During this time, he showed great courage. He bravely rescued wounded friends twice. He did this even while under enemy fire. For these heroic actions, he was later given the Medal of Honor.
End of Service
John Clancy left the army for the first time on August 1, 1892. He was a private at that time. He was discharged at Fort Sheridan in Illinois.
He decided to join the army again shortly after. He re-enlisted in Company E on August 14, 1892, also at Fort Sheridan. His second period of service ended on September 26, 1894, at Fort Sheridan.
