Family Connections
John Clavie might have been related to another person named "Jhone Clavie." This other John Clavie was a candlemaker who died in 1586. He was known for supporting Mary, Queen of Scots during a time of conflict called the Marian Civil War.
Making Special Drinks
In April 1598, the city of Edinburgh held a big party. It was a banquet for Ulrik, Duke of Holstein, who was Queen Anne's brother. The party took place at the home of Ninian MacMorran.
John Clavie and another apothecary, John Lawtie, helped prepare special drinks for the banquet. They sweetened and spiced wine to make a drink called Hippocras. Hippocras was a popular drink in those days, often made with wine, sugar, and spices like cinnamon and ginger. Another apothecary, Alexander Barclay, made rose water that smelled very nice.
Serving the Royal Family
John Clavie became an official apothecary to King James in March 1603. This was a very important job. A few months later, on July 19, he was also chosen to serve Queen Anne of Denmark. He also looked after Prince Henry and the other royal children. This meant he was responsible for their medicines and health needs.
Later Life
John Clavie passed away in 1607. After his death, another apothecary named Lewis Lemire took his place in the royal household. Lewis Lemire was from a place called Flanders.
John Clavie was married to a woman named Marie Aldinstoun. After John Clavie died, Marie married Patrick Livingstone.
