John Crichton, 3rd Earl Erne, was an important Anglo-Irish nobleman and politician. He was also a Knight of St Patrick. He lived from 1802 to 1885.
Early Life
John Crichton was born on July 30, 1802. He was the oldest son of Lt.-Col. John Creighton and Jane Weldon. His father was the Governor of Hurst Castle. John had several brothers and sisters. His grandfather was John Creighton, 1st Earl Erne, who was also an important figure.
Career and Public Service
In June 1842, John became the 3rd Earl Erne. This happened after his uncle, the 2nd Earl, passed away. An 'earl' is a type of nobleman, and an 'earldom' is the title and lands that go with it. After becoming Earl, he changed the family name spelling to Crichton.
In 1845, he was chosen to be an Irish Representative Peer. This meant he had a special seat in the House of Lords in the British Parliament. He stayed there until he died. He also served as the Lord Lieutenant of County Fermanagh from 1845 to 1885. A Lord Lieutenant was the King or Queen's representative in a county.
In 1868, he received a special honor. He was made a Knight of the Order of St Patrick. This is a very old and important award in Ireland. Later, in 1876, he was given another title: Baron Fermanagh. This new title meant that he and his future family members would automatically have a seat in the House of Lords.
Lord Erne is also known because of a man named Charles Boycott. Mr. Boycott worked for Lord Erne on his land in County Mayo, Ireland. There were problems with how Mr. Boycott treated the farm workers. This led to a situation where people refused to work with or buy from Mr. Boycott. This action became known as a "boycott," a word we still use today.
Family Life
On July 6, 1837, Lord Erne married Selina Griselda Beresford. She was the daughter of Rev. Charles Cobbe Beresford. Together, they had four children:
- Lady Louisa Anne Catherine Crichton (1838–1866). She never married.
- John Henry Crichton, 4th Earl Erne (1839–1914). He later married Lady Florence Mary Cole.
- Hon. Charles Frederick Crichton (1841–1918). He married Lady Madeline Olivia Susan Taylour in 1873.
- Hon. Sir Henry George Louis Crichton (1844–1922). He was an aide de camp (a personal assistant) to King Edward VII. He married Letitia Grace Cole-Hamilton and later Lady Emma Baring.
Lord Erne passed away in October 1885, at the age of 83. His oldest son, John, took over his titles and became the 4th Earl Erne. John later became a government minister.
