John Cullum, born on March 2, 1930, is an American actor and singer. He is famous for his many roles in Broadway musicals and plays. He has won two Tony Awards, which are like the Oscars for theater. He also became well-known for his roles on TV shows.

John Cullum's Early Life and Family
John Cullum was born in Knoxville, Tennessee. He went to Knoxville High School and then the University of Tennessee. He was even part of the university's tennis team!
In 1959, John Cullum married Emily Frankel. They were together until she passed away in 2024. They have one son, JD Cullum, who is also an actor, just like his dad!
John Cullum's Amazing Career
John Cullum has had a very long and successful career in acting and singing. He has performed in many famous shows on Broadway, which is the biggest stage for plays and musicals in New York City.
Broadway Musicals and Plays
John Cullum first appeared on Broadway in 1960 in the musical Camelot. He played Sir Dinadan and even filled in for the main actors, including Richard Burton.
In 1965, he got his first starring role in On a Clear Day You Can See Forever. This role earned him his first Tony Award nomination. He also won a Theatre World Award for his performance.
He played Edward Rutledge in the musical 1776. This show was about the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Cullum later played the same role in the movie version of the musical.
One of his most famous roles was Charlie Anderson in Shenandoah. He won a Tony Award, a Drama Desk Award, and an Outer Critics Circle Award for this part in 1975.
He won his second Tony Award for playing Oscar Jaffee in the musical On the Twentieth Century in 1978. Later, he received more Tony nominations for his roles in Urinetown The Musical (2002) and 110 in the Shade (2007).
In 2007, John Cullum was honored by being added to the American Theatre Hall of Fame. This is a very special award for people who have made a big impact on theater.
Television Roles
Many people know John Cullum from his roles on television.
- He played Holling Vincoeur, a friendly tavern owner, in the TV show Northern Exposure. He was even nominated for an Emmy Award for this role!
- He appeared in 15 episodes of the medical drama ER as Dr. Mark Greene's father.
- He also played a farmer named Jim Dahlberg in the TV movie The Day After.
- You might have seen him as a lawyer or judge named Barry Moredock on Law & Order and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.
- He was Big Mike in several episodes of the comedy show The Middle.
- More recently, he played Senator Beau Carpenter on the CBS series Madam Secretary.
- He even appeared as "Leap Day William" in an episode of the comedy show 30 Rock.
In 2017, when he was in his 80s, John Cullum joined the cast of the Broadway musical Waitress as the character Joe.
