An Explorer's Life

Early Naval Adventures

In 1605, John Cunningham became the captain of a Danish naval ship called the Trost. It was a 60-ton ship. The King of Denmark, Christian IV, sent Cunningham and two other ships on a special mission. Their goal was to find the old Norse settlements in Greenland again. This was part of three expeditions sent between 1605 and 1607.

Cunningham was the main commander of this first expedition. He worked with a pilot named James Hall. Other captains on this trip included Godske Lindenov on the Løven and John Knight on the Katten.

More Expeditions and Whaling

In 1606, Cunningham sailed as captain of the Løven under Godske Lindenov's command. Later, in 1615, Cunningham joined another naval trip. This time, they went to Spitsbergen, a group of islands in the Arctic. Their job was to ask foreign whalers to pay tolls, which were like taxes for fishing there. On this journey, Cunningham met other important people like Robert Fotherby, Thomas Edge, and Adriaen Block.

The next year, in 1616, he captained a ship called the Gabriel. This expedition, led by Jørgen Daa, aimed to clear the coasts of Norway, the Faeroes, and Iceland of illegal whalers and pirates.

Governor of Finnmark

In 1619, John Cunningham was given a very important job. He was made the Governor of Finnmark. This region is in the far north of Norway. He stayed in this important position until he passed away in 1651. As governor, he was in charge of many legal cases in the area.
