John Cust, who later became the 1st Earl Brownlow, was an important British politician. He was born on August 19, 1779, and passed away on September 15, 1853. He was a member of the Tory Party, which was a major political group in Britain at the time.
About John Cust
John Cust was the oldest son of the 1st Baron Brownlow and his second wife, Frances. He went to famous schools like Eton and Trinity College, Cambridge. In 1801, he traveled around Europe, visiting countries like Russia and Germany.
In 1802, John Cust became a Member of Parliament (MP) for a place called Clitheroe. An MP is someone elected to represent people in the British Parliament. He held this job until 1807.
When his father passed away in 1807, John Cust inherited his father's special title and all his family's lands. This included a beautiful home called Belton House in Lincolnshire.
In 1805, he became a member of the Royal Society, a group for important scientists. From 1809 to 1852, he was the Lord Lieutenant of Lincolnshire. This was a high-ranking official who represented the King or Queen in a county.
In 1815, he was given two new important titles: Earl Brownlow and Viscount Alford. He also received a special honor called the Royal Guelphic Order in 1834.
John Cust received money related to the end of slavery in the British Empire. This happened because of a law passed in 1837. He was also involved in managing the estate of a family whose wealth came from slave ownership. This was part of the historical changes happening in Britain at the time.
His Family
Lord Brownlow was married three times and had several children.
His first marriage was to Sophia Hume on July 24, 1810. They had three children together:
- Lady Sophia Frances (1811–1882)
- John Hume, Viscount Alford (1812–1851)
- Charles Henry (1813–1875)
Sadly, Sophia passed away in 1814.
In 1818, Lord Brownlow married Caroline Fludyer. They had four daughters:
- Lady Caroline Mary Cust (1819–1898)
- Lady Amelia Cust (1821–?)
- Lady Katherine Anne Cust (1822–1885)
- Lady Elizabeth Cust (1824–1824)
Caroline also passed away in 1824.
Lord Brownlow then married for a third time to Lady Emma Sophia Edgcumbe. They did not have any children together.
John Cust's oldest son, John Hume, passed away before him in 1851. So, when John Cust himself passed away in 1853, his titles and estates went to his grandson, John William Spencer Egerton-Cust.
