What is the Victoria Cross?

The Victoria Cross, often called the VC, is the most important award for bravery. It is given to soldiers who show amazing courage. They must face the enemy in battle. It's a very special medal.

A Heroic Act in India

When he was 24 years old, John Daunt was a lieutenant. This was during the Indian Mutiny in 1857. On October 2, 1857, in a place called Ghota Behar, India, he showed incredible bravery.

Lieutenant Daunt and another soldier, Serjeant Dynon, were very brave in battle. They captured two enemy cannons. The last cannon was very dangerous. It was firing grapeshot, which is like many small bullets. This was hurting many of their soldiers.

They bravely rushed forward and captured the cannon. They even used their pistols to stop the enemy gunners. Many of their own soldiers were saved because of their bravery.

Lieutenant Daunt also showed great courage on November 2, 1857. He chased enemy soldiers across a field. He followed them into a thick area with only a few other soldiers. He was badly hurt trying to drive out a large group of these soldiers. His bravery that day saved many of his group.

Life After the Battle

After these brave actions, John Daunt continued his military career. He eventually became a colonel.

His Victoria Cross medal is now on display. You can see it in the Lord Ashcroft Gallery. This gallery is part of the Imperial War Museum in London.

John Daunt's family also had notable members. His son, named John, was a golfer. He even represented Great Britain in the 1900 Summer Olympics. His granddaughter, Yvonne Daunt, became a dancer. She danced with the Paris Opera in the 1920s.
