Sir John Delamare (around 1320 – 1383) was an important knight who lived during the time of King Edward III of England. He is best known for building the impressive Nunney Castle in Somerset, England. He served the king and held several important jobs in his local area.

Sir John Delamare was a respected figure in medieval England. He was part of the king's court, which meant he was close to the king and involved in important decisions. His life spanned much of the 14th century.

Building a Castle

In 1373, Sir John Delamare received special permission from the king. This permission allowed him to transform his large home, called a manor house, in Nunney into a strong, fortified Nunney Castle. Building a castle was a huge project and showed his wealth and importance.

Important Roles and Responsibilities

Sir John held several key positions that helped him manage the local areas for the king.

High Sheriff

He served as a High Sheriff in different counties. A High Sheriff was like a chief local official. Their job was to help keep the peace, enforce laws, and collect taxes for the king.

Knight of the Shire

Sir John was also chosen to be a "Knight of the Shire." This role meant he represented his county in important meetings, similar to how a Member of Parliament works today.

  • He represented Somerset in 1373, 1377, and 1382.

Family and What Came Next

Besides his public duties, Sir John Delamare was also the lord of the manor for other lands. These included Fisherton Delamare and Bishopstrow in Wiltshire. After he passed away in 1383, his niece, Eleanor Delamere, inherited his properties. When Eleanor married William Paulet, Nunney Castle and the other lands eventually passed to the Paulet family.
