John Matthew Kofi Setor Dumelo, born on February 3, 1984, is a famous Ghanaian actor and politician. He is a Member of Parliament for the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency. He is also the Deputy Minister of Food and Agriculture in Ghana. He took office on March 13, 2025, after being chosen by President John Dramani Mahama. John Dumelo is currently part of the 9th Parliament.

Early Life and School

John Dumelo was born in Ghana. His father, John Dumelo, was a civil engineer. His mother, Antoinette Dumelo, worked as a customs officer.

He went to Christ the King School in Accra for his basic education. Later, he attended Achimota School, where he was a member of the Drama Club.

He started studying Civil Engineering at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). He also won the "Mr University" contest at KNUST. After that, he studied at the GIMPA's School of Public Service and Governance.

Career in Acting

John Dumelo began acting when he was very young, in the early 1990s. His first movie was called Baby Thief in 1992. He was only 7 years old at the time and was paid 20 thousand old Ghana cedis for his role. This amount is now equal to 2 Ghana cedis.

Business Ventures

Besides acting, John Dumelo is also an entrepreneur. This means he starts and runs his own businesses. In 2012, he launched his own clothing line called J.Melo.

He is also involved in farming. He grows crops and raises animals.

Getting Involved in Politics

John Dumelo was a very active celebrity during the National Democratic Congress (Ghana) (NDC) Party's campaign in 2016. He supported the NDC government. Because of his dedication, he was appointed by the former president of Ghana, H.E. John Dramani Mahama. He served as a Director of Operations for a youth group that supported the NDC.

On July 19, 2019, Dumelo decided to run for a parliamentary seat. He picked up a form to join the NDC primaries. On August 24, 2019, he won the NDC parliamentary primaries. This meant he would represent the NDC in the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency for the 2020 general elections.

He launched his campaign plans for the 2020 election on October 18, 2020. He promised to use half of his salary to help young people in his area if he was elected. However, on December 7, 2020, John Dumelo lost the parliamentary elections. The winner was Lydia Alhassan from the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

He ran again as a parliamentary candidate for the Ayawaso West Wuogon area. This time, he won the 2024 election as a member of the National Democratic Congress.

In February 2025, he was chosen to be the Deputy Minister-designate for Food and Agriculture. Parliament approved his appointment. He was officially sworn into office on March 13, 2025.

Personal Life

John Dumelo is married to Gifty Mawunya Nkornu. They had a big wedding at the Royal Senchi Resort in Akosombo. Their first child was born in 2018. Their second child, a daughter, was born in 2022.

On April 1, 2014, he became the first Ghanaian to get one million likes on Facebook.

In October 2023, John Dumelo made a promise. He said he would walk backward barefoot from the UG main gate to the Presec main gate. He made this pledge if Presec-Legon won the Ghana National Science and Maths Quiz. He kept his promise and completed the walk after Presec-Legon won the competition.
