Early Life and Military Adventures

John Duncan King was born in 1789. When he was 17 years old, in August 1806, he joined the British Army. By February 1808, he had become a lieutenant.

He served in several important military campaigns. He was part of the Walcheren expedition, which was a British attack on the Netherlands. He also fought in the Peninsular War in Spain and Portugal. During this war, he was present at major battles like Busaco, Vitoria, and the Pyrenees. He was seriously injured on July 28, 1813, during one of these battles.

After the war, he was present when the Allied forces occupied Paris in 1815. On March 16, 1830, he was promoted to captain. Later that year, on December 28, 1830, he was put on half-pay. This meant he received half his usual salary but was not actively serving.

A Passion for Painting

Even while serving in the army, John Duncan King had a great talent for painting. He especially loved painting landscapes, which are pictures of natural scenery.

Exhibiting His Art

In 1824, he showed one of his paintings at the Royal Academy of Arts in London. It was a view of Spain, based on a drawing by another officer, Lieutenant-General Hawker. In 1836, he exhibited a painting of Portugal. Over the years, he occasionally showed his paintings as an honorary exhibitor. These included views near Killarney in Ireland and Boulogne in France. In 1843, he exhibited a picture called A Pilgrim.

He also displayed 39 landscape paintings at the British Institution, another important art gallery. His last painting there was shown in 1858.

Around 1852, John Duncan King became a Military Knight of Windsor. This was a special honor for retired military officers. He lived in Windsor Castle until he passed away on August 21, 1863.
