John Benedict Eden, Baron Eden of Winton (born September 15, 1925 – died May 23, 2020) was an important British politician. He was a member of the Conservative Party. From 1963 to 1983, he was known as Sir John Eden, 9th Baronet. He served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Bournemouth West from 1954 to 1983.
Early Life and Education
John Benedict Eden was born in England on September 15, 1925. His father was Sir Timothy Calvert Eden. John went to two well-known schools: Eton College in England and St Paul's School in New Hampshire, USA.
During World War II, he joined the military. He served as a Lieutenant in the Rifle Brigade, the 2nd Gurkha Rifles, and the Gilgit Scouts.
John Eden was also related to a famous politician. He was the nephew of Sir Anthony Eden, who was the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1955 to 1957. In 1963, John inherited the title of Baronet from his father. This made him the 9th Baronet of West Auckland and the 7th Baronet of Maryland.
Political Career
John Eden first tried to become a Member of Parliament (MP) in 1953 but was not successful. However, he was elected as a Conservative MP for Bournemouth West in 1954. He won this seat in a special election called a "by-election."
When he was first elected, he was the youngest MP in the House of Commons. This special title is called the "Baby of the House." He continued to represent Bournemouth West until 1983.
After leaving the House of Commons, he became a life peer on October 3, 1983. This meant he was given the title of Baron Eden of Winton. As a Baron, he became a member of the House of Lords, which is the second chamber of the UK Parliament. He retired from the House of Lords on June 11, 2015.
John Eden held several important roles during his career:
