John Joseph Esmonde was born on January 27, 1862. His birthplace was Drominagh, a small area in County Tipperary, Ireland. His father was James Esmonde, and his mother was Caroline Sugrue. John was the second of their four children.
His Family Life
John Esmonde was married twice. His first wife was Rose Magennis. They lived in a place called Pontesbury in England. Together, they had six children: three sons and three daughters.

After Rose passed away in 1901, John Esmonde married his second wife, Eily O'Sullivan, in 1904. They had seven more children together. In 1910, the family moved back to Ireland. One of his sons from his second marriage, Eugene Esmonde, was given a very brave award called the Victoria Cross in 1942. He received it after he had passed away. Another son, Paddy, earned the Military Cross in 1944 while serving as a doctor in the Royal Army Medical Corps.
His Passing and Remembrance
On April 17, 1915, John Esmonde passed away. He was serving as a Captain in the Royal Army Medical Corps, which is a part of the British Army that provides medical care. He died from pneumonia and heart problems. These health issues were caused by working extremely hard.
John Esmonde was buried in his family's special burial place in Terryglass, County Tipperary. He is remembered on the Parliamentary War Memorial in Westminster Hall. This memorial honors 22 Members of Parliament who died during the First World War. In 1932, a beautiful, handwritten book was created for the House of Commons to remember people like John Esmonde. This special book includes a short story about his life and how he died.
