Sir Anthony Charles Esmonde (born January 18, 1899 – died March 17, 1981) was an important Irish politician. He was also a medical doctor and a farmer. He was a member of the Fine Gael political party.

About Anthony Esmonde
His Early Life and Education
Anthony Esmonde was born on January 18, 1899. His birthplace was Ashlett House in Church Stretton, England. He was the youngest of six children in his family.
He went to school in Germany and then at Clongowes Wood College in Ireland. Later, he studied medicine at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. He finished his medical training in 1921.
His Medical Career
After becoming a doctor, Anthony Esmonde worked for the Royal Navy. He was a surgeon-lieutenant from 1921 to 1925. After that, he worked as a doctor in different towns in Ireland. He practiced medicine in Nenagh, County Tipperary, and Gorey, County Wexford.
His Time in Politics
Becoming a Politician
Anthony Esmonde first tried to become a Teachta Dála (TD) in 1943. A TD is a member of the Dáil Éireann, which is like Ireland's parliament. He ran for the Fine Gael party in the Tipperary area but did not win that time.
He tried again in 1951 and was elected for the Wexford area. His older brother, Sir John Lymbrick Esmonde, had been a TD for Wexford before him.
Serving in the Dáil
Anthony Esmonde was very popular in Wexford. He was re-elected five times in a row! He served as a TD until 1973, when he decided to retire from the Dáil.
Working in Europe
After leaving the Dáil, he also served as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP). He was part of the first group of Irish MEPs. He worked in this role from January to March 1973.
His Family Connections
Anthony Esmonde came from a well-known family.
- His oldest brother was Sir John Esmonde, 14th Baronet.
- Another brother, Geoffrey Esmonde, sadly died in World War I in 1916.
- His half-brother, Eugene Esmonde, was a brave pilot. He was given a special award called the Victoria Cross after he died in World War II.
Anthony Esmonde married Eithne Moira Grattan Esmonde in 1927. They had six children together, three sons and three daughters. One of his sons, John Esmonde, also became a Fine Gael TD for Wexford later on.
Anthony Esmonde passed away on March 17, 1981, in a nursing home in Wexford.
