John Feary, One Tree Hill, Greenwich, with London in the Distance (1779)

John Feary was a British artist who lived from about 1745 to 1788. He was known for painting beautiful landscapes, which are pictures of nature and outdoor scenes.

About John Feary's Life

John Feary won a special prize from the Society of Arts in 1766. This prize was for young artists under 21 years old. He won it for a drawing he made of art from the Duke of Richmond's private collection.

In 1776, Feary won another award. He received a large silver palette for one of his landscape paintings. People say he learned from a famous painter named Richard Wilson.

Feary's landscape paintings were very detailed and neat. Rich and important people often hired him to paint pictures of their large homes and beautiful gardens. Some of these paintings were later made into prints. In 1784, he traveled around Derbyshire to find new scenes to paint.

John Feary's Artworks

John Feary first showed his paintings at the Free Society of Artists in 1770. He displayed two paintings: A View from Maise Hill in Greenwich Park and A View of a Storm breaking from the Surrey side of Westminster Bridge. In 1771, he showed A View taken from Highgate Hill at the same place.

In 1772, Feary began to show his art at the Royal Academy. One of his first paintings there was A View of Clapham Common, taken from the North Side. He continued to show his work at the Royal Academy often until 1788. In the year he passed away, he exhibited A View of Castle Hill, Devonshire.
