John Franklyn Mars was born on October 15, 1935. His parents were Audrey Ruth (Meyer) and Forrest Mars Sr.. His grandfather, Franklin Clarence Mars, started the well-known American candy company, Mars, Incorporated.

John went to the Hotchkiss School in Lakeville, Connecticut. He graduated from there in 1953. Later, he studied at Yale University.

John Mars is part of the Mars family, who own the company. For many years, his share of the company made him one of the richest people in the world.

In September 2010, his wealth was about US$10 billion. This made him the 52nd richest person globally. By October 2012, his wealth grew to an estimated $20.1 billion.

In 2016, his net worth reached $29 billion. This made him the 19th richest person in the world at that time. In January 2017, he helped Mars, Inc. buy VCA, Inc. This was a large pet care company, and the deal cost $7.7 billion.

Family and Life

John Mars married Adrienne Bevis in June 1958. They have three children together. Their daughter, Linda Anne Mars, was born on May 23, 1960. Their first son, Frank Edward Mars, was born on March 13, 1963. Their second son, Michael John Mars, was born on November 22, 1967.

He used to live in Fairfax County, Virginia. Now, he lives in Jackson, Wyoming.

In March 2015, Queen Elizabeth II gave him a special honor. She awarded him an honorary knighthood at Windsor Castle in England.
