Early Life and Education
John Freind Robinson was born in Witney, England. He came from a family with many important people. His father was Dean William Freind, a senior church official. His uncle was Archbishop Richard Robinson, 1st Baron Rokeby, a very high-ranking church leader. His grandfather, Robert Freind, was the headmaster of Westminster School, a famous school in London.
John Freind Robinson also attended Westminster School, just like his grandfather. After that, he went to Christ Church, Oxford, which is a well-known university.
Church Career and Roles
John Freind Robinson followed in his family's footsteps and had a long career in the church. In 1774, his uncle, the Archbishop, appointed him to a role called Registrar of the Prerogative Court. This job involved keeping important records for the church. He held this position for many years.
He also served in several other important church roles:
- He was a Prebendary of Tynan in Armagh Cathedral from 1778 to 1786. A Prebendary is a type of priest who receives income from a cathedral.

- Later, he was the Precentor of Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin from 1797 to 1823. A Precentor is in charge of the music and services in a cathedral.
Changing His Name and Title
In 1793, John Freind changed his last name to Robinson. He did this to inherit the land and property of his uncle, Baron Rokeby, who had no children of his own.
Later, in 1819, he was given the special title of a Baronet. This meant he became Sir John Freind Robinson, 1st Baronet, and this title could be passed down to his eldest son.
Family Life
In 1786, John Freind Robinson married Mary Anne Spencer. She was the daughter of James Spencer from Rathangan, County Kildare, in Ireland. They had a large family together. One of their sons was Robert Spencer Robinson, who became a naval officer.
