John Goddard (born July 29, 1924, died May 17, 2013) was an amazing American adventurer. He was also an explorer, a writer, and a speaker. He became famous for setting and achieving many incredible goals throughout his life.

John Goddard's Amazing Life

When John Goddard was just 15 years old in 1940, he did something incredible. He made a list of 127 goals he wanted to achieve in his life! These goals ranged from simple things like learning to type, to huge challenges like climbing Mount Everest. He told LIFE Magazine he didn't want to look back and wish he had done more. He wanted a life full of excitement, fun, and learning.

Early Life and Adventures

After serving in World War II with the Army Air Forces, Goddard spent time traveling the world. He even joined a special group called the Adventurers Club. This group was made up of people who explored new and developing places. John was the youngest member of this elite club at the time.

Around 1948-1950, Goddard also served as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He worked in places like Manitoba and Minnesota. Soon after, he continued his world travels, heading to Foggia in Italy.

Pursuing His Goals

John Goddard then began to seriously work on his list of goals. In 1951, he became the first person to travel the entire length of the Nile River in a kayak. This was a huge achievement! He had many more adventures after that. In 1956, he explored the Congo River. Then, in 1968, he climbed Mount Kilimanjaro. These exciting trips helped him become a successful speaker. He would share his stories with audiences around the world. He was also the first person to explore the entire Congo River.

From 1950 onwards, Goddard spent a lot of time in Uganda and nearby areas. He studied anthropology at the University of Southern California. He learned a lot about different cultures and their ways of life.

Books and Legacy

John Goddard wrote two books about his experiences. One was called The Survivor. The other was Kayaks Down the Nile. This book told the story of his amazing kayak trip down the Nile River in 1950. He was joined by two French friends on that journey. His story was even featured in the popular book series Chicken Soup for the Soul.

His adventure on the Colorado River was also featured in a film. This movie was called Devil's Highway The Fabulous Colorado River. It even showed a time when his plane crashed near the river's source, which he survived.

John Goddard passed away on May 17, 2013, in Southern California. He left behind an inspiring story of a life lived to the fullest, proving that with a plan and determination, you can achieve your dreams.
