He was born in Ontario, Canada, and later passed away in North Vancouver.
An Olympic Champion
In 1904, John Bell Gourlay was the captain of the Galt F.C. soccer team. This team did something amazing: they won the gold medal in the soccer tournament at the 1904 Olympic Games!
Playing for Gold
The 1904 Olympic soccer tournament was a bit different. Only three teams competed: two from the United States and one from Canada, which was Galt F.C.
John Gourlay played in both of his team's matches. His team won both games, earning them the gold medal.
What Did a Defender Do?
John Gourlay played as a defender. In soccer, a defender's main job is to stop the other team from scoring goals. They work hard to protect their own team's goal. Defenders are important for keeping the ball away from their net and helping their team win.
A Canadian Soccer Hero
John Bell Gourlay's gold medal win with Galt F.C. was a big moment for Canadian soccer. It showed that Canadian teams could compete and win on the world stage, even in the early days of the Olympic Games.
