John Grey, 2nd Viscount Lisle (born April 1480 – died 9 September 1504) was an important person in British history during the time of the Tudor kings and queens. When he passed away, his title of Viscount Lisle ended. However, the older title of Baron Lisle went to his daughter, Elizabeth, who was his only child and was born after his death.

About John Grey

John Grey was born in 1480. He was the oldest son of Edward Grey, 1st Viscount Lisle and Elizabeth Talbot. His mother, Elizabeth, was the 3rd Baroness Lisle and inherited this title from her father, John Talbot, 1st Viscount Lisle and 1st Baron Lisle.

John had two sisters:

  • Anne Grey
  • Elizabeth Grey, 6th Baroness Lisle (died 1529). She was married twice:
    • First to Edmund Dudley, who worked for King Henry VII. He died in 1510 after facing serious charges from King Henry VIII.
    • Second to Arthur Plantagenet (died 1542). Arthur was an illegitimate son of King Edward IV. He was given the title of Viscount Lisle because of his wife's family history.
  • Muryell Grey

John Grey became Viscount Lisle in 1492 after his father died.

John's Personal Life

In June 1504, John Grey married Muriel Howard (who died in 1512). She was the daughter of Thomas Howard, 2nd Duke of Norfolk. John and Muriel had one daughter, Elizabeth Grey, 3rd Viscountess Lisle and 5th Baroness Lisle (1505–1519). Elizabeth was born after her father's death. She inherited a large estate called Kibworth Beauchamp Manor in Leicestershire from him.

His Daughter Elizabeth

In 1506, John's widow, Muriel, married Thomas Knyvett. He became Elizabeth's stepfather. Sadly, both her mother and stepfather died in 1512, leaving Elizabeth an orphan. She then became the ward of Sir Charles Brandon. Being a "ward" meant that Sir Charles Brandon was responsible for taking care of her and her money until she grew up.

Elizabeth was even promised in marriage to Sir Charles Brandon in 1513 when she was only eight years old. However, in 1515, Sir Charles Brandon married Mary Tudor instead. Because of this, he gave up his responsibility for Elizabeth. Later, Elizabeth was supposed to marry Henry Courtenay, 1st Marquess of Exeter, but she died before they could officially marry.

His Death

John Grey died at his family home, Kingston Lisle Park, in September 1504. He was only 24 years old. He was buried in Abingdon Abbey.
