The John Guild House, also known as the Manoa Valley Inn, is a historic building in Honolulu, Hawaii. It is located at 2001 Vancouver Drive. The house was built in 1915 by Milton Moore, a lumber dealer from Iowa. In 1919, a local businessman named John Guild bought the house. Over the years, the house has been fixed up and made new many times. It became a recognized historic place when it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2002.

A Home with a History

In the 1980s, a businessman from Honolulu named Rick Ralston bought the house. He was the founder of the popular company Crazy Shirts. Rick Ralston fixed up the house in 1982. He turned it into a bed and breakfast, which is like a small hotel where you can stay and get breakfast.

At first, he called it the John Guild Inn. Later, it became known as the Manoa Valley Inn. This is the name it still uses today. In 1990, a company called Nakamitsu Corporation bought the inn. They also did more work to make it even nicer.

What Makes the House Special?

The Manoa Valley Inn is a three-story building. It has a special roof style called "gabled cottage." It is located close to the campus of the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Inside, the inn has eight guest rooms. These rooms are decorated with beautiful old furniture and art.

The house has many interesting parts to its design. It has several "extended gables," which are parts of the roof that stick out. These gables have fancy supports called "decorative buttresses." On the side of the house facing the valley, there is a covered entrance for cars. This is called a porte-cochere. It is built in the same style as the rest of the house. On the side facing the ocean, there is a wide, covered porch called a lanai. From here, guests can enjoy a great view of the city.

Recent Changes

In 2007, the person who owned and ran the Manoa Valley Inn decided to sell it. They asked for $4.2 million for the property. This included the half-acre lot and the house, which is about 4,424-square-foot (411.0 m2). The owner decided to sell after an earthquake on October 15, 2006. The earthquake badly damaged the outside chimney of the house. Luckily, the rest of the house was not damaged.
