John Hawkes is an American actor. He has won two Independent Spirit Awards. He has also been nominated for an Academy Award, two Primetime Emmy Awards, and a Golden Globe Award.
Hawkes is known for his roles in the movies Winter's Bone (2010) and The Sessions (2012). For these films, he was nominated for important awards like the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor and a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Motion Picture Drama. Some of his other movie roles include From Dusk till Dawn (1996), The Perfect Storm (2000), American Gangster (2007), Martha Marcy May Marlene (2011), Lincoln (2012), and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017). Early Life and Beginnings
John Hawkes grew up in Alexandria, Minnesota. It was a quiet, small town in the Midwest. He finished high school at Jefferson High School. Later, he moved to Austin, Texas. There, he was part of music bands like Meat Joy and King Straggler.
Acting Career Highlights
John Hawkes started his movie career in 1985. His first film was Future-Kill. At first, he used the name John Perkins. He later changed it to John Hawkes because another actor had the same name.
Television Roles
Hawkes has appeared in many popular TV shows. He played Greg Penticoff in the first season of 24. From 2004 to 2006, he was a character named Sol Star in the HBO series Deadwood. He also played Dustin Powers, the brother of Kenny Powers, in all four seasons of Eastbound & Down. Fans of ABC's Lost might remember him as Lennon. In 2024, he had a main role in the fourth season of True Detective, where he even sang a song he wrote.
