John Hawkes is an American actor. He has won two Independent Spirit Awards. He has also been nominated for an Academy Award, two Primetime Emmy Awards, and a Golden Globe Award.

Hawkes is known for his roles in the movies Winter's Bone (2010) and The Sessions (2012). For these films, he was nominated for important awards like the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor and a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Motion Picture Drama. Some of his other movie roles include From Dusk till Dawn (1996), The Perfect Storm (2000), American Gangster (2007), Martha Marcy May Marlene (2011), Lincoln (2012), and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017). He has also been in many TV shows, especially Deadwood (2004–2006), Eastbound & Down (2009–2013), and True Detective (2024).

Early Life and Beginnings

John Hawkes grew up in Alexandria, Minnesota. It was a quiet, small town in the Midwest. He finished high school at Jefferson High School. Later, he moved to Austin, Texas. There, he was part of music bands like Meat Joy and King Straggler.

Acting Career Highlights

John Hawkes started his movie career in 1985. His first film was Future-Kill. At first, he used the name John Perkins. He later changed it to John Hawkes because another actor had the same name.

Television Roles

Hawkes has appeared in many popular TV shows. He played Greg Penticoff in the first season of 24. From 2004 to 2006, he was a character named Sol Star in the HBO series Deadwood. He also played Dustin Powers, the brother of Kenny Powers, in all four seasons of Eastbound & Down. Fans of ABC's Lost might remember him as Lennon. In 2024, he had a main role in the fourth season of True Detective, where he even sang a song he wrote.

John Hawkes has been in many well-known movies. These include Me and You and Everyone We Know, The Perfect Storm, American Gangster, Wristcutters: A Love Story, Martha Marcy May Marlene, and Lincoln.

In 2011, he was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Winter's Bone. He also won the Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Male for this movie. The Texas Film Hall of Fame honored him with a Rising Star Award in the same year. Hawkes was offered a role in The Walking Dead, but he felt it wasn't the right fit for him.

In 2012, his movie The Sessions was a big hit at the Sundance Film Festival. Critics praised the film as "enjoyable and light-hearted." Hawkes received long standing ovations for his performance.

In 2019, Hawkes returned to play Sol Star in Deadwood: The Movie. This movie brought back almost the entire cast from the original series.
