John Hawkes is an American actor. He has won two Independent Spirit Awards. He has also been nominated for many other big awards. These include an Academy Award, two Primetime Emmy Awards, and a Golden Globe Award.
Hawkes is famous for his roles in movies like Winter's Bone (2010) and The Sessions (2012). For Winter's Bone, he was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. For The Sessions, he was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Motion Picture Drama. He has also appeared in other films. These include From Dusk till Dawn (1996) and The Perfect Storm (2000). Other movies are American Gangster (2007) and Lincoln (2012). He was also in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017).
He has acted in many TV shows too. You might know him from Deadwood (2004–2006) and Eastbound & Down (2009–2013). He was also in the fourth season of True Detective (2024).
Early life
John Marvin Perkins was born in Alexandria, Minnesota. His mother was Patricia Jeanne Olson. His father was Peter John "Pete" Perkins. His dad was a farmer who grew wheat and corn. He also raised hogs and cattle.
John grew up in a small, quiet city. It was a "midwest Scandinavian community." He finished high school at Jefferson High School. After that, he moved to Austin, Texas. There, he was part of two bands. One was called Meat Joy and the other was King Straggler.
Career highlights
John Hawkes' first movie role was in Future-Kill (1985). He was credited as John Perkins back then. He later changed his stage name to John Hawkes. This was because another actor already had the name John Perkins.
Hawkes played Greg Penticoff in the first season of 24. From 2004 to 2006, he was in the HBO series Deadwood. He played a merchant named Sol Star. He also played Dustin Powers in Eastbound & Down. Dustin was the brother of the main character, Kenny Powers. He was in all four seasons of this HBO show. Hawkes also appeared as Lennon on ABC's Lost.
Some of his other movie roles include Me and You and Everyone We Know and The Perfect Storm. He was also in American Gangster and Wristcutters: A Love Story. You might also know him from Martha Marcy May Marlene and Lincoln.
In 2011, he was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. This was for his role in Winter's Bone. He also won the Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Male for this movie. In the same year, he received a Rising Star Award. This award came from the Texas Film Hall of Fame. Hawkes was offered a role in The Walking Dead. He turned it down because he felt it wasn't the right fit for him.
In 2012, the movie The Sessions was very popular at the Sundance Film Festival. Hawkes received long standing ovations after the movie was shown. Critics at the festival praised it as "accessible, enjoyable, and light-hearted."
Hawkes was interested in playing his role as Sol Star again. This happened in the Deadwood movie. Deadwood: The Movie started filming in October 2018. It came out on May 31, 2019. Hawkes and almost all the original cast members were in it.
